Verd Antique
« Back to Glossary Index
Verd Antique is a mixed, mottled stone of calcite, dolomite, and/or magnesite. Its colors include white, dull green, and light and dark grey. Because it can take a high polish, it was, and is, used as a decorative stone. Examples of Verd Antique can be seen in some of the columns inside the Hagia Sophia and the columns of the porch of the Baghdad Pavilion in the fourth (innermost) court of Topkapı Palace.
