Treaty of Apamea
« Back to Glossary Index
A peace treaty in 188 BC between the Roman Republic and Antiochus III, ruler of the Seleucid Empire, ending a war between the Romans and the Seleucids. The Seleucid Empire was founded by Seleucus I, a general of Alexander the Great, who controlled much of the lands Alexander and his generals had conquered. The treaty obliged Antiochus III to abandon Europe and Asia west of the Taurus mountains in Asia Minor (today’s Türkiye). Control of much of Asia Minor was then given to Eumenes II, the son of Attalus I and King of Pergamum, and ally of Rome.
