Theater
« Back to Glossary Index
A theater is a semi-circular performance venue either built in Greek style (into the side of a hill) or Roman style (supported by arches). One can tell if a theater is of Roman rather than Greek origin if it has arches since the Romans invented arches for such structures. An amphitheater is fully circular or oval-shaped—not semicircular, despite the everyday erroneous use of the word today. Both Greek and Roman-style theaters are found throughout Türkiye and Greece.
