Spolia are building materials or sculptural pieces that were reused in new buildings. Spoliation was the practice of removing stone that had already been quarried from a building to use it in a new building. Because of spoliation, architects often find parts of monuments, architectural fragments, and even gravestones of antiquity embedded in structures built centuries later.
