Polycrates (reigned 540s—522 BC) was the ruler of the island of Samos from c. 540s—522 BC. He had a reputation as both a fierce warrior and an enlightened tyrant. Under his reign, Samos became a strong naval power, and many of the structures we see there today were built, including the Tunnel of Eupalinos, the Heraion (Temple of Hera), and the harbor.
