Pisidia
« Back to Glossary Index
Pisidia is an ancient region of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) located north of Pamphylia, northeast of Lycia, west of Cilicia, and south of Phrygia. The city was called “Pisidian Antioch” because the name differentiated it from the many other cities called “Antioch” during the Hellenistic period.
During Augustus’s reign, Roman military veterans colonized Pisidian Antioch. Later, the region of Pisidia became an important early Christian center. Paul the Apostle preached in Pisidion Antioch, as recorded in the Book of Acts, during his first missionary journey. Paul also visited Pisidian Antioch during his second and third missionary journeys.
