Phrygia
« Back to Glossary Index
Phrygia was a kingdom in the west-central part of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey). It is associated with the mythical King Gordias, whose “Gordian knot” was considered impossible to untie until Alexander the Great conquered Phrygia and cut the knot with his sword.
Phrygia is also associated with King Midas, who is said to have turned whatever he touched into gold.
During the Roman period, the Apostle Paul and his companion Silas traveled through Phrygia and Galation, preaching the Christian gospel.
