Philetaerus (lived 343—263 BC, reigned 282—263 BC) was the founder of the Attalid dynasty of Pergamum (today’s Bergama) in Asia Minor (today’s Turkey). After Alexander the Great’s death, Philetaerus assisted two of Alexander’s generals in various battles as they fought for territory. He ended up becoming the ruler of Pergamum. Unable to have children because of an injury he suffered as a boy, he adopted his nephew Eumenes I, who succeeded him as ruler of Pergamum.
