Peter the Apostle (lived c. 1—68 AD), also known as Simon Peter or Saint Peter, was one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ and one of the first leaders of the early church. He appears repeatedly in all four New Testament gospels and the Book of Acts. The New Testament also contains two epistles, First Peter and Second Peter, believed to have been authored by him. Catholic tradition considers Peter to be the first pope. Peter was also the founder of the Church of Antioch (in today’s Hatay, Türkiye). There is a cave there, believed to be Peter’s church.
