Mehmet IV

Mehmet IV (lived 1642—1693, reigned 1648—1687) was the 19th sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Mehmet came to power after a coup that overthrew his father and became the second-longest reigning sultan in Ottoman history after Suleiman the Magnificent. Military defeats and political instability plagued the beginning and end of Mehmet’s reign, but during the middle of his reign, he oversaw the Ottoman Empire’s deepest expansion into Europe. A disgruntled military eventually overthrew Mehmet, and he retired to Edirne, in the European part of Turkey north of Istanbul, where he eventually died a natural death.
