Lokum, also called Turkish Delight, includes a variety of similar confections based on a gel made from starch and sugar. Premium types of lokum can include chopped dates, pistachios, hazelnuts, or walnuts, among other ingredients. Lokum comes in cubes or round form, sliced from a roll, and is dusted with powdered sugar or powdered creme to keep the pieces from adhering to each other. Lokum’s origins are unknown, and the Greeks and the Turks claim to have invented it. Some believe it could even date back to Byzantine times. Lokum makes a relatively inexpensive gift for tourists to take back to their home countries.
