Leo III the Isaurian (lived c. 685—741, reigned 717-741) was a Byzantine emperor known for putting an end to the Twenty Years Anarchy, a period of great instability in the Byzantine Empire marked by the rapid succession of several emperors to the throne. He was also known for many military defeats and territorial losses. He was an iconoclast who forbade the veneration of icons.
