Late Bronze Age Collapse
« Back to Glossary Index
The Late Bronze Age Collapse was a societal collapse in the Mediterranean region in the 12th century BC. It was sudden, violent, and culturally disruptive for many Bronze Age civilizations, even ending the Hittite Empire. Other civilizations continued but in a weakened form. While this period was tragic, it allowed lesser civilizations to grow and become powerful because the former powers no longer dominated them.
