Ionia is an ancient region of the central Aegean region on the western coast of Asia Minor (today’s Turkey). It comprised a narrow coastal strip from Phocaea to the north to Miletus in the south and included the islands of Chios and Samos. Cities in Ionia and the Ionian League included Miletus, Myus, Priene, Ephesus, Colophon, Lebedos, Teos, Erythrae, Clazomenae, and Phocaea, as well as the islands of Samos and Chios. Ionia became a part of the Roman province of Asia in 133 BC, after Attalus III of Pergamum died, having bequeathed all of his territory to the Romans.
