Hippodamus of Miletus

Hippodamus of Miletus (lived during the 5th century BC) was an ancient Greek architect, urban planner, mathematician, meteorologist, and philosopher. He is considered the father of European urban planning for his “Hippodamian plan,” which was a grid layout of streets with rectangular city blocks. The Hippodamian Plan was used to design many ancient Greek cities, including Rhodes, Miletus, Ephesus, Priene, and Piraeus.
