Eumenes I
« Back to Glossary Index
Eumenes I (reigned 263—241 BC) was a dynastic ruler of the city of Pergamum (today’s Bergama) in Asia Minor (today’s Turkey). When Pergamum was under the control of the Seleucids (the family of a general of Alexander the Great) and enjoyed much autonomy, Eumenes I revolted and defeated the Seleucid king Antiochus I. This made him the sole ruler of Pergamum and the vast territories he had conquered.
