Delian League

« Back to Glossary Index

A confederacy of 150-330 Greek city-states founded in 478 BC under the leadership of Athens. It was an offensive and defensive alliance to fight the Persian Empire. Its name comes from the island of Delos, where the league would meet at the Temple of Apollo. While it began as an alliance of equals, it was so dominated by Athens that it eventually became known as the Athenian Empire, where Athens had complete dominion over the other members.
