Croesus (lived c. 620—546 BC, reigned 585—546 BC) was the King of Lydia, with his capital in Sardis. He was famous for his immense wealth and was credited for issuing the first true coins, which were made of electrum. He is also renowned for his meeting with the Oracle of Delphi while deciding whether to attack the Persian king Cyrus the Great. The oracle said that if he attacked Cyrus, he would “destroy a great empire.” Croesus then attacked Cyrus and destroyed a great empire—his own!
