A cistern is a covered or underground water reservoir waterproofed with hydraulic plaster to store rainwater. It is distinguished from wells because of its waterproof lining.

A cistern is a covered or underground water reservoir waterproofed with hydraulic plaster to store rainwater. It is distinguished from wells because of its waterproof lining.
A waterproof, underground space used to collect rain water and store it. It is different from a well in that it is waterproof and used to collect rainwater, whereas a well is much deeper and draws groundwater.
