Cilician Gates

« Back to Glossary Index

A mountain pass connecting the plains of Cilicia on the south Meditteranean coast of Asia Minor (modern-day Türkiye) to the central Anatolian Plateau, through a narrow gorge of the Gökoluk River. For thousands of years, it was a major commercial and military route. Today, the E-90 highway running from Tarsus to Ankara passes through the Cilician Gates, connecting Tarsus in the south with Cappadocia in the north.
