Book of Revelation

« Back to Glossary Index

Also called the Book of the Apocalypse or the Apocalypse of John, the Book of Revelation is the last book of the New Testament. It begins with the author, whose name is John (believed to be one of Jesus’ original disciples), exiled on the Greek Island of Patmos, off the Aegean coast of Asia Minor. John describes a series of apocalyptic visions in which the risen and glorified Jesus Christ provided messages for Christian believers, especially the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, which include churches at Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. The visions also included prophecies about the coming tribulation and the second coming of Christ.
