The Battle of Manzikert was fought between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk Empire, the predecessors to the Ottoman Empire, on 26 August 1071 near present-day Malazgirt in Muş Province, Türkiye. The Seljuks defeated the Byzantine Army and captured the emperor, Romanos IV Diogenes. The disastrous Byzantine defeat weakened the Byzantines, so they could no longer defend their borders, opening the door for the Turks to conquer central Anatolia.
