Asclepieion

« Back to Glossary Index

Also called an Asclepium, an asclepieion was a healing center in the ancient Greek and Roman world and the site of a temple dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing. Treatment at an asclepieion centered around a person’s spiritual needs. Patients would also go to sleep in anticipation of Asclepius visiting them in a dream and telling them the cure, or they would have a dream interpreted by a priest, who would then prescribe a treatment. Many famous ancient physicians served at an asclepieion, including Hippocrates and Galen.
