A sultana is a female royal title and the feminine form of the word “sultan.” It has been officially used for female monarchs in some Islamic states but has also been used for the sultan’s wives and consorts. Initially, both males and females used the word “sultan,” but in the Western world, the word “sultan,” when it applied to a woman, was translated to “sultana” to distinguish them from the Ottoman ruler.
