Bayram Throne
« Back to Glossary Index
The Bayram Throne is a gold-plated throne mounted with tourmalines. It was made in 1585 by the vizier Ibrahim Paşa as a present to Sultan Murat III.
Upon becoming sultan, the new sultan would sit on this throne during the succession ceremony. He would also sit on it during religious and festive holidays (called Bayram) as his subjects and officials stood before him and paid homage. These ceremonies took place in front of the Gate of Felicity in the Second Courtyard.
You can see the Bayram Throne in the Conqueror’s Pavilion, which houses the Imperial Treasury, in the third courtyard of Topkapı Palace.
