Ramazan (also spelled Ramadan), is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. It commemorates Mohammed’s first revelation, and the observance of Ramazan is one of the five pillars of Islam. It lasts from twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next. Every day before fasting, before sunrise, Muslims eat a hearty breakfast. After a day of fasting, after sunset, they eat a feast-like meal called iftar.
