Hürrem Sultan

Hürrem Sultan (lived 1504—1558, tenure 1533—1558), also known as Roxelana, was the chief consort and wife of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. She was one of the most powerful and influential women in the Ottoman Empire. She was captured during a slave raid and sold to the Ottomans, then taken to Constantinople, where she was kept in the imperial harem. She became the favorite concubine of Sultan Suleyman, who broke Ottoman tradition by marrying her. She became an advisor to Sultan Suleiman and was actively involved in government affairs.
