Aeolis was an ancient district south of and including parts of Mysia, comprising the western and northwestern region of Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), mainly along the coast, and also several offshore islands such as Lesbos. Its main cities were Pergamum and Mytilene.
Assos is famous for being the home of the Greek philosopher Aristotle, and the place where the Apostle Paul met his companions on one of his missionary journeys.
