Attalus III
« Back to Glossary Index
Attalus III (reigned 138—133 BC) was the king of Pergamon (now called Bergama) and the Pergamene Kingdom on the Aegean Coast of Asia Minor (today’s Türkiye). Attalus III is best known for leaving his kingdom to the Romans in his will when he died. Because he had no male children or heirs, he decided it was best to give his kingdom to the Romans to avoid violence and the fact that the Romans would probably take it anyway.
