Python
« Back to Glossary Index
Python was a serpent god who lived at what later was called Delphi and presided over the oracle there. He was the son of the earth goddess Gaia. When Apollo tried to establish his oracle at Delphi, Python opposed him because he was accustomed to giving the oracles there. Apollo killed Python, either for this reason or because Python had persecuted Apollo’s mother, Leto, while she was pregnant with him.
