A mythological Phoenician princess that Zeus, the king of the gods, fell in love with. To satisfy his passion for her, he turned himself into a beautiful white bull and approached her, bowing in submission. Europa climbed onto the bull and rode him. The bull began running so fast she couldn’t get off and held on to the bull, which ran to the sea and swam to the island of Crete, where Zeus took his human form and raped Europa. Zeus eventually gave Europa three divine children and other gifts. The Greeks were so fond of Europa that they named their continent after her, which is where the name “Europe” came from.
