Praetorian Guard

An elite unit of the Imperial Roman army that served as personal bodyguards and intelligence agents for the Roman emperors. They were famous for their palace intrigues and influence over imperial politics, and they could overthrow emperors and proclaim new ones. In 312 AD, Constantine the Great disbanded the praetorian guard and destroyed their barracks, ending its existence.
