Also referred to as the nine muses. Daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (the goddess of wisdom), the muses were the inspirational goddesses of literature, science, and the arts. They were considered the source of the knowledge embodied in poetry, lyric songs, and myths related orally in ancient Greek culture. While the number of muses varied according to time and region, it was standardized at nine. The nine muses were Calliope, Clio (Klio), Polyhymnia, Euterpe, Terpsichore, Erato, Melpomene, Thalia, and Urania.
