Iconoclasm is a period of destruction of icons and other religious images. Iconoclasts are those who engage in or support iconoclasm. The term originates from Byzantine Iconoclasm, the struggles between proponents and opponents of religious icons in the Byzantine Empire from 726 to 842 AD.
