Hippodamian Grid Plan

« Back to Glossary Index

An urban plan for ancient cities, developed by Hippodamus of Miletus, was based on right angles and perpendicular streets, creating city blocks with a main north-south street and a main east-west street. The Hippodamian Plan was used to design many ancient Greek cities, including Rhodes, Miletus, Ephesus, Priene, and Piraeus. Modern city planners still use the city layout originally invented by Hippodamus.
